Under the direction of the Manager and/or other team supervisors, direct, supervise and coordinate hourly personnel in a production, service or maintenance department in accordance with company policy and practices, operating schedules and controls for one or more shifts in more than one area of the plant. 

Job Description

  • Responsible for quality, methods, production schedules and general department administration.
  • Plan and layout work.
  • Assign, instruct, direct and assist employees.
  • Monitor use of safety devices and equipment, supervise departmental housekeeping, and maintain a constant alert for hazardous conditions.
  • Participate in, and coordinate company programs having to do with employee communications, training and orientation, wage administration and job evaluation.
  • Interview applicants, appraise employee performance, and recommend wage adjustments.
  • Collaborate with production control, engineering, and manufacturing engineering to effect production scheduling and inventory, drawings, and process changes.
  • Anticipate production problems and devise and implement procedures to offset loss of man-hours and schedule interruptions.
  • Contact vendors and suppliers concerning quality of material or services, selection of services and suppliers, and expedite some orders.
  • Investigate accidents and new equipment needs or procedures for possible cost saving improvements.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports concerning the departments’ efficiency and productivity
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities

EHS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Complete all work in a safe manner and follow all safety requirements consistent with supporting the Company’s goals.
  • Lifting guidelines in accordance with the Manual Lifting Guidelines noted in the Safety Handbook.
  • Follow all environmental requirements consistent with supporting the company’s environmental performance goals.
  • Complete, and actively participate in all other EHS training requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, college degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with metal machining and use of lathes, mills, CNC Tooling, Manual Machine tools, etc. preferred.
  • Previous Machining Supervisory or Lead experience a preferred.
  • Must have good organizational, communication, and prioritization skills.
  • Must have the ability to become familiar with products, processes, and techniques of the department/company.
  • Must have knowledge of personal computers, machining practices, CNC programming is preferred.

 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to sit for extend periods of time; a minimum of 2 hours.
  • Must be able to maneuver to all areas of the office, shop, warehouse, or manufacturing plant
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and carry up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, reach, kneel, twist, and grip items while working at assigned desk area.
  • Must have the manual dexterity and coordination to operate office equipment.
  • Must be able to simultaneously manage several objectives, changing priorities and reassign priorities to complete assignments.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and aural cues.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work environment is typically considered within a Smiths location during normal or extended business hours to include offices, manufacturing plants and repair facilities. Work environment may also include customer sites including oil well sites, and meeting venues.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and approved PPE is required when on the factory floor
