Group Executive Assistant

Michelle Coe has been part of the Smiths Family for 40 years, joining in August 1983. She is now based in Flex Tek USA as Group Executive Assistant.

What is the key reason for you to stay at Smiths for 40 years?

The primary reason I have continued working at the same place for 40 years is a combination of job satisfaction and a deep sense of belonging. I enjoy my job, working with the people and the atmosphere. I feel I’ve been able to make a difference through the various roles I’ve been in. Smiths has provided me with a good living, allowing me to take care of my family and others. I felt like I’ve mattered and that I’ve had the opportunity to make a difference.

What is your proudest achievement at Smiths?

Throughout my career, Smiths has given me the ability to work with and help people. This enabled me to help them to achieve their goals and improve their lives. Helping others is not just a job for me; it’s my life’s purpose. I wake up every day excited to make a positive impact on the lives of those I serve. I’ve had the privilege of working with dedicated teams and partnering with organisations that share my passion for making a difference. Together, we’ve achieved remarkable outcomes. I’ve witnessed the company’s evolution and have been proud to be part of its journey. Loyalty goes both ways, and the company has reciprocated by offering stability, support, and opportunities for personal and professional development. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a company that places a strong emphasis on helping individuals grow while fostering an environment where success is a continuous journey.

What makes Smiths’ company culture stand out?

Our culture is special. Others talk about being a family, but we truly are. We take care of each other. We support each other through good times and bad. These values also extend to our families and our communities. Representing Smiths in the community is an honour and makes me proud to be part of the team.

What makes Smiths a great place to work?

The family feel and values of the people. Holding true to our values and doing what is right in my opinion has allowed us to be blessed with numerous opportunities and the ability to overcome challenges so we can take care of our families and each other. Our commitment to values also creates an environment where we can thrive both personally and professionally.

Tell us about one of your best moments here at Smiths?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my 40 years with the company has been the opportunity to contribute to the growth and well-being of our associates. While I’ve had many memorable moments, one that stands out for me recently was during the recent recognition of my 40-year anniversary and being thanked for my contribution to Smiths was absolutely amazing. I heard from so many associates from all over the world telling me how much I had helped them and the difference I had made. I had no idea that I have impacted that many people’s lives. It brought tears to my eyes and made my heart happy.

What advice would you give to colleagues who have just started their career at Smiths?

Build relationships. It’s important to truly know your co-workers not only those you work with daily but those throughout the organisation. If you are in a manufacturing environment, spend time on the production floor and get to know the associates. They are the heart and soul of the organisation and are our most valuable assets. Interaction with employees on the floor is so rewarding and they really appreciate the time given to them. You will build relationships that will last you through your career.

What advice would you give your younger self?

You have so many opportunities in this company. Do the right thing and take care of the people. This is the key to your success. There is nothing you cannot achieve. Remember, your career is a journey, it’s okay to make mistakes and learn from them along the way. The company values your growth and development, so take advantage of the opportunities available to you. Do not be afraid to fail. Failing is a valuable teacher and you will learn and grow from your mistakes.

What makes you excited for your future at Smiths?

Knowing that I am truly appreciated and the ability I continue to be given to be able to impact others. I have been able to make a difference and knowing that the prospect of retiring from a company that values its employees means the world to me. It has been an amazing journey and I look forward to my future with Smiths.
