Smiths will supply components to Boeing’s long range anti-submarine warfare aircraft

SABRITEC, part of the global engineering business Smiths Group, today announced it has won an order for the Boeing P-8A Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft Program (MMA).

The P-8A is a long range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft capable of broad-area, maritime and littoral operations.

A derivative of the Next-Generation 737-800, the P-8A combines superior performance and reliability with an advanced mission system that ensures maximum interoperability in the future battle space.

For this programme Sabritec, part of the Smiths Interconnect business, will be supplying a MIL-C-5015 circular plug and receptacle connector derivative with six 350 Amp power contacts located within the circular pattern.

The connector contains a break-away feature within the connector front receptacle shell mechanism to “break-away” with a pre-determined bending moment along each axis of the connector assembly. The connector is flange mounted to each of the four engines’ wing pylons. If an engine breaks away from the flange of the wing pylon, the connector assembly will break away along with the engine minimizing the domino effect of catastrophic damage to the aircraft fuselage or leading of the wing.

Boeing noted that Sabritec’s proposal was the “best value” approach combined with the elements of the request for proposal that included, but were not limited to, past performance, capability to the Boeing requirements, technical solutions and management solutions to the requirements of this proposal.
