9 July 2008

Wiesbaden, 9 July 2008 -  Smiths Detection, part of the global technology business Smiths Group, today formally opened a high-tech production plant in Germany designed to meet the soaring global demand for its advanced x-ray scanning machines.

The multi-million euro facility in Wiesbaden uses state-of-the-art technology to make a range of x-ray sensor and imaging devices deployed in airports throughout the world to scan hand luggage and checked-in bags for explosives.

Speaking at the inauguration, Philip Bowman, Chief Executive of Smiths Group, said: "Smiths Detection in Wiesbaden has long led the way in providing the technological breakthroughs that have made air travel far more secure across the world. The opening of this facility marks a new and exciting chapter in this outstanding success story."

Much of the output will comprise Smiths Detection’s Advanced Threat Identification X-ray (aTiX) systems which are already deployed in major UK and US airports such as Heathrow and Washington/Baltimore.  Unlike conventional systems, aTiX captures multiple views of carry-on bags in a single sweep and includes powerful software to help the operator identify potentially dangerous items.

Construction of the new building, sited beside the existing plant, began less than a year ago. The 4,000 square metre production facility, fully operational from today, is designed specifically for multi-line production of aTiX and other x-ray inspection systems.

Roland Muesse, Smiths Detection President for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: "Our regional headquarters in Wiesbaden is a global x-ray security hub which has supplied about 50,000 installed systems worldwide to date. This new facility will further enable Smiths Detection to maintain its long-held commitment to providing security systems of the highest quality."
