Smiths Group, a world leader in the practical application of advanced technologies across a range of industries, has established a government relations office in Washington D.C. to protect and promote its growing presence in the United States.
The five divisions of Smiths, which operate in the security and inspection, medical, energy, communications and engineered components markets, employ about 9,400 people and generate annual sales of around $2.2 billion in the US alone.
Philip Bowman, Chief Executive Officer, said: "Our businesses are rooted in the United States where four of our five divisions are headquartered. It is our biggest single market and asset base with around 100 facilities in 40 states. Setting up a government relations office in Washington underlines our commitment to engage in the public policy process, and the new team will lend valuable support to our efforts in securing jobs, creating opportunities and boosting local economies."
The four-strong Washington office will be led by Chris Swonger, Senior Vice President - Government Relations, a 21-year public affairs veteran who previously held similar posts in a number of high-profile corporations.
