CHICAGO - November 7, 2023 - John Crane, a global leader in rotating equipment solutions and energy transition technologies and services, and a business of Smiths Group plc, is pleased to announce that it has entered into partnership to supply its energy transition technology to a CO2 sequestration project. This is one of the world’s largest offshore Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) facilities globally, and the largest in Malaysia.

John Crane is providing 24 dry gas seals and 12 filters for many CO2 compressors in the project. John Crane’s technology will support the facility’s removal and underground storage of 3.3 metric tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere on an annual basis, the equivalent of taking 700,000 cars off of the road. The CCUS process is a key decarbonization technology and an energy security contributor, as noted by the United Nations Climate Panel and International Energy Agency.

The project, due to begin operation in Q4, 2025, is one of John Crane’s most recent new energy projects. It adds to a growing portfolio of energy storage and broader sustainability installations, demonstrating the mission critical role its solutions play in the global energy transition, while aiding customers in their own decarbonization goals. John Crane’s new energy pipeline has more than doubled in the last 12 months.

President of John Crane, Bernard Cicut, commented:

“Carbon capture, utilization and storage technology plays a crucial and growing role in the global efforts to accelerate and support the energy transition. It is central to our vision for the energy industry’s sustainable future, and we are proud to be able both to contribute to the targets set out in the Paris Agreement and enable our customers to achieve their own decarbonization goals”.
