New state-of-the-art technology, supplied by Smiths Detection, will detect potential threats in baggage without the need to remove electrical items and liquids

Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies, today announces that it will supply Fukuoka International Airport Co., Ltd with 12 HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX X-ray scanners and 12 automatic tray return systems, the iLane A20. The technology will be in use at the North and South Domestic Checkpoints.

The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX, a computed tomography (CT) X-ray scanner produces high-resolution volumetric 3D images for quicker and deeper baggage assessment and low false-alarm rates. Implementation of the new scanner will allow passengers to leave their liquids and electronics in their hand luggage, helping to speed up security screening, without compromising on safety. The iLane A20, a next-generation fully automated tray return system, delivers high throughput and efficiency, streamlining the screening process and eliminating passenger bottlenecks.

42 units of Smiths Detection’s industry-leading 3D X-ray scanners are already in use in Japan, as well as 143 iLane tray return systems. The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX and iLane A20 are expected to be able to scan more than 250 passengers per hour, approximately 1.5 times the previous throughput of around 170 passengers per hour.

Smiths Detection’s North & South Asia Market Head, Aurelien Guilbert said: “We’re thrilled to be working Fukuoka International Airport to enhance security and improve the overall passenger experience by allowing passengers to leave large electronics and liquids in their carry-on bags. Already in use across country, the H-SCAN 6040 CTiX is the leading checkpoint CT X-ray in Japan”.

Smiths Detection’s technology will be installed by the end of March 2024. Fukuoka Airport domestic checkpoint will become the third airport in Japan to harness the power of Smiths Detection’s 3D X-ray screening technology, alongside Haneda Airport domestic checkpoint and Naha Airport domestic checkpoint.

About the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX:

The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX is an advanced screening of carry-on baggage using CT (Computed Tomography) X-ray to deliver a high level of explosive detection and can allow for cabin baggage to be scanned without removing electronic devices and liquids – expediting the screening process. ECAC EDS CB C3 approval and featured on the TSA's CPSS QPL & APL for base, medium and large configuration checkpoint CT checkpoint screening systems. The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX is the most energy efficient checkpoint CT on the market, helping to lower the total cost of ownership and reduce customer energy demands compared to similar products.

About the iLane A20:
The iLane A20 was designed to increase throughput, reduce queues and improve operational efficiency at aviation passenger checkpoints. This intelligent lane has evolved from our extensive experience in integrated checkpoints and meets the most demanding customer requirements.
