Smiths Medical MD, Inc, the US Minnesota-based infusion pump manufacturer, part of Smiths Group, Medical division and makers of the Deltec Cozmo(Cozmo) Insulin Pump, has received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow it to market its CoZmonitor TMblood glucose module in the treatment of diabetes.
The Deltec Cozmo insulin pump is a small, lightweight, mobile phone-size device worn by a person with diabetes to deliver insulin continuously, day and night, through a short, flexible plastic tube that is inserted just under the skin and changed every few days. Patient friendly features include a full-sized 300-unit insulin cartridge, power from a single AAA battery, and a large, easy-to-read display.
The Cozmoinsulin pump offers significant advantages over currently available pumps, most notably its ease of use and flexible programming. This allows people with diabetes to personalise their treatment to meet their lifestyle demands. It also has many safety features designed with paediatric use in mind. It is estimated that approx. six per cent of the U.S. population has diabetes.
The CoZmonitor TMblood glucose module is attached to the back of the Deltec Cozmo insulin pump to create an "all-in-one" insulin pump and blood glucose monitoring system.
Smiths Medical MD, Inc, partnered with Abbott Diabetes Care to create the CoZmonitorTM blood glucose module, utilising their proven blood glucose monitoring and strip technology.
Lawrence Kinet, Managing Director of Smiths Medical said; "Blood glucose monitoring is essential for good diabetes management. The CoZmonitorTM blood glucose module is a major advancement in making diabetes management easier."
Smiths Medical anticipates filling orders for the CoZmonitor TMblood glucose module beginning in August 2004.
