Second-generation ETD system employs two processing tubes for enhanced detection sensitivity

SMITHS Detection, part of the global engineering business Smiths Group, today announced its next-generation portable desktop trace detection system, the IONSCAN 500DT, has been certified by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) having successfully met its performance criteria for Explosives Trace Detection Systems (ETD).

The IONSCAN 500DT, an advanced explosives detection instrument, is capable of detecting microscopic amounts of over 40 different types of explosive substances.

Utilizing dual Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) detectors, the IONSCAN 500DT can detect and identify sub-nanogram amounts of explosives from a single sample in less than eight seconds. The design of the IONSCAN 500DT, which incorporates two independently controlled IMS detectors in a single system, enables the system to maintain optimum analysis conditions for all target substances without compromising detection performance.

Mark Laustra, Vice President of Transportation Security Technology and Programs, Smiths Detection, said: The IONSCAN 500DT was developed in response to a worldwide demand for optimized and simultaneous detection of explosives and narcotics.

With the utilization of two independent IMS detectors, we can offer the TSA an integrated approach for the highest possible level of detection in order to keep our nations airports and other highly-trafficked venues safe from explosives and narcotics.

The IONSCAN 500DT utilizes proprietary software specially developed for effective and efficient detection. The instrument has an ergonomic design, a large, colour touch-screen display, built-in printer and a 40 GB internal hard drive. To increase the quality of sample analysis, an advanced sampling wand is included to eliminate the need for an operator to handle a sample swab after every operation. The IONSCAN 500DT has also been optimized for reduced maintenance and cost of ownership.

With more than 6,000 trace detection systems deployed throughout the world, Smiths Detection has designed the IONSCAN 500DT for application at airports, ports and border crossings, public and private buildings, courthouses and correctional facilities.
